Itinerary

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a well-known elephant sanctuary located in Pinnawala, Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The primary mission of the orphanage is to provide care and shelter to orphaned and injured elephants, as well as to breed and raise elephants in captivity.

Here are some key features and activities associated with the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage:

  1. Elephant Herd: Pinnawala is home to a significant number of Asian elephants, and you can witness a large herd of elephants here. You can see them bathing in the nearby river, roaming in the open area, and being fed.

  2. Feeding and Bathing: One of the most iconic scenes at Pinnawala is the daily bathing of elephants in the Maha Oya River. Visitors can watch and even participate in this activity. You can also observe the elephants being fed, which is another popular attraction.

  3. Conservation and Research: The orphanage is involved in conservation efforts to protect the Sri Lankan elephant population. They also conduct research and education programs related to elephants and their care.

  4. Visitor Experience: Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage attracts a large number of tourists. It provides an opportunity for visitors to get up close and personal with these magnificent animals and learn about their conservation and the challenges they face.

While Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage offers a unique opportunity to see elephants in a relatively controlled environment, it’s important to do your own research and make an informed decision about whether to visit, taking into account the ethical and conservation aspects of such facilities. The welfare of the animals should always be a top priority.
